LAMARK RETURNED TO consciousness at a splashing sound. He hadn't even thought he was that close to the water, and yet in the blink of an eye, Yuvie was there right in front of him, smiling, kissing, tail splashing as he hummed a happy tune.

He kissed Lamark hungrily, as if it had been ages and not mere hours since their parting, though Lamark didn't mind this urgency in the least. His hands snaked up Lamark's shirt, rubbing around over his—ouch, that hurt!

"Ack!" Lamark started and sat up suddenly, realizing that he'd been dreaming, and Yuvie wasn't actually here.

Something had woke him up, though. Something under his shirt...

When he looked down, his shirt was bulged out. Lamark jerked, fanning out his shirt in hopes whatever was beneath would come out and not hurt him again. He stood and pulled at his shirt, yelping when tiny claws dug into his chest, and the thing inside his shirt started chortling and flapping frantically.

"Ah! Get out!" Lamark yelped and pleaded and when the creature didn't comply, he yanked his shirt off and tossed it aside.

A squawking bird flapped in his face, making a ruckus of coos and chortles at him then flying over his head. Lamark felt a wet splat upon his hair and cringed.

"Yuck!" He ran into the water and splashed himself to get rid of the little present the bird had left on his head.

Come to think of it, where had his hat gone? Lamark turned back to the beach and scanned the sands in search of his hat. That heathen of a bird was nowhere to be found either, and good riddance. The thing probably flew away after getting out of his shirt.

Lamark spotted his hat near his firewood and walked over to it. As he was bending down to pick it up, the hat suddenly jumped. What the? Lamark tried for it again, only for his hat to start moving away from him, bobbing along the sand slowly. Perhaps a crab had taken refuge under it, thinking it a nice new shell. Well, he couldn't have that now.

He bounded in front of his hat to cut off the little beast who thought to steal his precious possession and reached for his hat again. If there really was a crab underneath, he should be wary. After all, crabs pinch, and no doubt with his history that crab would find a way to pinch him if he got anywhere within the thing's vicinity. No, that wouldn't do at all. He had enough injuries as is. He'd reach quickly for the hat and then get away. The crab wouldn't have a chance to pinch him then.

When he snatched his hat up there was a loud squawk from beneath that startled him and sent him tumbling into the sand. That incessant bird again! Why was it under his hat? The bird danced around, cooing softly as it bounded over then hopped on Lamark's knee. Beady orange eyes looked up at him, intently enough that he felt a strange, knowing intelligence behind them.
